The girls and I have never slept in a tent. Believe it or not I have never ever been camping in the 33 years of my life.. Sure, when I was in grade 8 I went to camp with my school but we slept in cabins on beds but I have never slept in a tent on the ground! Paul on the other hand would always camp when he was living in Europe. He would always have a tent in the trunk of his car, ready for whenever he might need to pull over while travelling.
Well, we knew that camping was something that we wanted to do as a family. A tradition that we wanted to start that will make many memories for our family. So, we finally bought a tent and sleeping bags for the girls and decided to start slow by pitching the tent in the backyard. Since we're going to sleep outside we might as well light a fire too and make it a real backyard camping night. So we started a fire in the fire pit and roasted some marshmallows.
Since Paul had to work early the next morning he decided to sleep indoors and get a proper nights rest so it was just the girls and I on this adventure!
The tent is a great size. It's suppose to sleep 8 but I don't see how unless you sleep like sardines and end up being glued to each other because it's so hot out. I think that it sleeps 5 comfortably. Paul and I on one side and the girls on the other.
Everything went really well until I was awoken in the middle of the night to rain. Now, I know that you can obviously camp in the rain but the night before we had a down pour and lots of thunder and I didn't want to be caught in that so I carried the girls inside along with all of our stuff! Not fun! The girls were really surprised to wake up in their beds! hahaha! I do think that they were kind of disappointed that they didn't get to wake up in the tent but I told them that at least they got a chance to fall asleep in the tent, and that we'll have plenty of opportunities to use the tent in the future!
The girls love roasting marshmallows. It is such a sticky treat but it's part of the campfire fun.
N likes to stick her marshmallow into the flames so it catches on fire and burns and then eats it! I don't get it and frankly don't care how she eats it. It's her marshmallow!
I'm trying to find some delicious easy meals that you can make over a camp fire. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! There are a million recipes out there and I don't know where to start so that's why I'm asking for help! :)
I still have a lot of little things that I want to get organized before we head out and sleep in the great outdoors. I do not want to be unprepared so I'm searching Pinterest for ideas and suggestions!
Enjoy your day!

Our family really enjoys going on bike rides. Now that all the girls can ride two wheelers and can keep up, we really like to go biking. We like to try different trails and of course stop along the way to take some photos.
I'm actually surprised with the way the photos turned out. It was really dark along this trail because of all the trees and I was worried that even with the flash I wouldn't have enough light but I have to say that I was pretty please with the results!
This is the St. Jacobs trail and it's about 3 km one way. The girls have absolutely no problem riding it especially since the trail is dirt packed and straight. The only problem that we faced was since it was Saturday, there were a lot of people walking along the trail too and the trail is pretty narrow with a creek running along side it on one side and then on the other side there are areas where it drops off pretty steep. This made the girls nervous sometimes but they did great!
When we finished our bike ride one of my sisters met us there. She had come to pick up N for a sleepover. After they left we headed over to the little caboose for an ice cream treat!
I'm looking forward to our next biking adventure!
This is how most sunny days look like at our place. We're usually outside enjoying the gorgeous weather. The girls are usually playing with the chickens, on their playground or sometimes even weeding their little garden. I think that they did a pretty good job!
Have a wonderful day!
